2021: The Henri Poincaré Institute is growing

Photo batiment perrin

Since 1928, the Henri Poincaré Institute promotes meetings between mathematicians from all around the world, and make the scientific culture accessible for everybody. In 2021, it will accomplish one of the most important mutation of its history when opening a 1700 square metre extension in the Jean Perrin building, located in front of the current building of the institute. This new space aims to share the passion of mathematics and theoretical physics to all the publics.

The IHP will thereby be able to offer more reception areas for scientific research in mathematics and theoretical physics. The new Perrin building will also host a 600 square-metre exhibition space, the “Maison Poincaré”, which will be very different from other science museums by showing the research under different viewpoints. This exhibition centre will address to all those curious to discover the scientific process and the vast universe of mathematics, their history and what they are in the twenty-first century. The goal is to give an idea of how a mathematician sees and understands the world, and to show why mathematics and theoretical physics are so important in the society.

Initiated in 2011 by Cédric Villani, mathematician, Fields medal laureate in 2010 and former director of the IHP, this project is now held by Sylvie Benzoni, mathematician and director of the IHP, and Rémi Monasson, physician and deputy director. This ambitious project is the outcome of a long process of opening up the institute to the society for the diffusion of the scientific culture.
