Frequently asked questions | Institut Henri Poincaré
The Institut Henri Poincaré is an international research and outreach centre in mathematics, theoretical physics and related fields. For more information please refer to the category The institute.
The Maison Poincaré is IHP’s museum of mathematics, it is located in the Perrin building. Its logo involves a pun in French on the word Poincaré (point=dot, carré=square). It opened on September 30th, 2023.
It is also the name of the IHP department in charge of outreach activities, which can take place right at IHP or somewhere else at partner locations.
The Borel building is the original building of IHP. It is made of red brick, and its entrance has inspired IHP’s logo. It owes its name to its founder, the mathematician Émile Borel.
The Perrin building corresponds to the former physical chemistry laboratory of Jean Perrin. It is made of yellow brick, and is endowed with an astronomical tower. IHP expanded to this building once it got refurbished. In particular, the Maison Poincaré occupies the ground floor (permanent exhibition) and part of the basement (temporary exhibitions and workshop room) of the Perrin building.
The entrances to the two buildings face each other.
The Institut Henri Poincaré has some spaces that are open to the public.
You can freely access our premises on the ground floor of the Borel building, which includes a cafeteria, as well as on the first floor where the library is located.
The other floors of the Borel building, and the upper floors of the Perrin building, are reserved for researchers and authorized staff. The usual opening hours of the building are specified at the bottom of the home page of this website. The specific library hours are specified on the dedicated page.
