Original title: "Gaston Darboux - Sous la profondeur des surfaces"
We propose a journey through the history of science to discover the many facets of this resolutely modern character for his time.
Introduction
As Dean of the Faculty of Sciences in Paris, Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Sciences and Vice-President of the Conseil supérieur de l'instruction publique, the exceptional responsibilities assumed by Gaston Darboux bear witness to the societal and political stakes of the mathematical sciences in the Belle Époque in France (1900). Darboux's commitment to teaching based on the most recent research has left a rich legacy, which is salient, sensitive and even manipulable through the collection of geometric models at the Institut Henri Poincaré.
